                                               ECO-TOWN PROPOSAL

In April 2008 East Lindsey District Council announced it had successfully bid for an "eco-town" at Manby, in the vicinity of Louth. The Louth Heritage Group takes the view that Louth's heritage would be endangered, not enhanced, by any such scheme. In general we deplore the notion of large new settlements being plonked in rural areas where no infrastructre exists to support them, and specifically we seek to protect the environs of Louth as well as Louth itself.

The Lincolnshire Marsh Protection Group, whose website features informative articles as well as listing the dates and venues of forthcoming eco-town meetings, are leading the local fight on this matter. We endorse their stand and gratefully applaud the work they have undertaken. See www.lincolnshire-marsh.orgThe same site offers a link to the petition to get the government to abandon the eco-town proposals for this area.

                                 LATEST NEWS: JUNE 26th 2008:

   COUNCILLORS VOTE OUT ECO-TOWN BID!

By a huge majority, East Lindsey District Councillors voted last night to drop the proposed eco-town idea. This is a victory for local democracy and it will hopefully safeguard Louth's continued existence as a thriving small market town with an important heritage.
